Paint-Bunny

5″x7″ acrylic, 2010. This bunny, who belongs to four-year-old Ella, is one of four identical bunnies: One sits pristinely on a shelf, while the other three enjoy equal rotation and affection. Ella can tell them apart with one little squeeze. The most beloved of them has a spot of brown paint on its back, left foot and is known adoringly as “Paint-Bunny.”

Sometimes the source material I’m given to paint from is inspiring to me for ridiculous reasons. In the photos sent by Ella’s mother Kristen, the bunny’s wide gestures and forward posture and the dramatic back-lighting evoked a Nineties-era Hype Williams hip-hop video for me. This kept me amused throughout the painting process, even while I kept in mind Kristen’s wish that the portrait be “very serene” and “a little vintage looking.” Is there such thing as late-nineties vintage?

Francis, Francis, and Nose

8″x10″ acrylic, 2010. I love this: The two rabbits, each named Francis, function as a unit known as the “Franci.” The flat blanket animal of ambiguous species (giraffe?) has always been referred to simple as “Nose.” Megan, who will give this painting to her nephew Carter, says that there was originally only one Francis. Carter’s mother bought the second bunny as backup, and Carter found it by mistake. From that point on the Franci have been equally loved.

Blue Bear and Yellow Bunny

9″x12″ acrylic, 2010. These are the battered and beloved childhood toys of Donna’s husband Andrew. She commissioned this portrait for his upcoming birthday. Donna notes that in most photos of Andrew as a child, these two are close by. She says that whenever he sees them even today, he remembers the warmth and safety of his childhood. I hope that this painting will have the same effect!

Floppy Bunny

8″x10″ acrylic, 2010. This is definitely the season of the floppy white bunny around here — I seem to always be working on several at a time! Cindy will give this portrait of Bunny to her almost-six-year-old son on his upcoming birthday, but she covertly showed it to his two-year-old brother when it arrived. I was thrilled to hear that upon seeing it he immediately cried, “BUNNY!!!”

Bunny Sur L’herbe

9″x12″ acrylic, 2010. The portrait of this bunny, called “Bunny,” will be Donna’s gift to her niece on her upcoming first birthday. Donna’s own children already have portraits of their favorite toys which were painted by (ahem) someone else, but that’s okay… I was delighted to paint this fabulous floppy bunny and I hope that he really does spend lots of time lounging on the grass just as we see him here.

Pookey Bunny

8″x10″ acrylic, 2010. There is something so meta about a toy sporting a shirt with a picture of another toy on it! This painting was commissioned by Peter for his wife as a fifth anniversary gift. Pete bought the bear for her when they had been dating for a year, and it has since become, as he very eloquently put it, part of their “shared mythology.” They have a baby on the way, and the painting will hang in their nursery!

Bunny Rabbit

8″x10″ acrylic, 2010. A million thanks to Melissa at www.suburbanbliss.net“>www.suburbanbliss.com for hosting the custom toy portrait giveaway that resulted in this painting! There were an amazing 448 comments/entries, and almost all of them wrote a brief description of a quirky, beloved toy that deserves to be imortalized. I wish I could paint them all! This bunny belongs to the son of winner Elizabeth — he is called, of course, Bunny Rabbit. His slightly bemused posture and expression were a delight to paint, and I found myself choosing a palette which evokes one of my favorite artists, Wayne Thiebaud.

Bunny, Bunny, Quack Quack, and Mr. Elephant

11″x14″ acrylic, 2010. Sharon has 3 children with four favorite toys between them. There are two “Bunnies,” the largest belonging to five-year-old Luke. The second “Bunny” and “Quack Quack” are three-year-old Lilah’s blanket animals. “Mr. Elephant” belongs to 8-month-old Daniel. Sharon commissioned this portrait of the entire group to hang in her own bedroom! I love this idea — it’s like a sort of symbolic, metaphorical portrait of her children.

Pink Bunny

pinkbunnyctp 5″x7″ acrylic, 2009. When he commissioned this little painting as a gift for his girlfriend, Ben requested that in the portrait this bunny be restored somewhat to it’s former pinkness. She has had this much-loved toy since childhood, and in the photos provided it does indeed appear to be a worn-out white. So hopefully the rosey tinge to the fur in ths painting will bring back some nice memories!

Bunny Ball

bunnyballctp 4″x5″ acrylic, 2009. This is a tiny painting of my husband’s childhood stuffed bunny. The bunny was unearthed a couple of months ago at his parents’ house and shown to me with a sense of extreme reverence. When I asked what the story with it was, there was a lot of shrugging and looking at one another. “It’s a bunny, and it’s a…ball,” the family finally agreed. I love that there really isn’t any more say about it than what is evident in its serious wear and tear.
