August’s Bunny

8″x10″ acrylic, 2011. 16-month-old August was given many stuffed toys when he was born, but this Jellycat bunny quickly emerged as his very favorite. He carries it everywhere, chews on its ears, and sleeps with his face buried in its fur. The bunny usually smells terrible as it can only be pried from August’s arms for washing when he is fast asleep! This is the second of two portraits commissioned by August’s mother Cassandra for her sons. Click here to see big brother Elijah’s stuffed monkey, and here to see another Jellycat bunny portrait I painted a few months ago.

bunny – this is my son, august’s sleeping buddy. august is only 16 months old and he buries his face in the bunny and chews on his ears. august carries the bunny absolutely everywhere! lots of people gave augie stuffed animals when he was born. his room is full of them, but for whatever reason, he became attached to this little bunny and he sleeps with him each night. the bunny actually smells terrible from spit up, food spills and other random catastrophes, but i can only wash him after august falls asleep and if i feel confident enough to pry the little bunny out of his hands without waking him 🙂

Bunny and Rainbow Blanket

5×7 acrylic, 2011. Holy moly, this portrait packed a lot of textural challenges into one tiny painting! Check out this furry white bunny with a soft blue blanket/body trimmed with satin reclining against a crocheted, rainbow-patterned blanket. This is one of two portraits which will be Christmas gifts for Katie’s two small sons, and both feature the winning combination of blanket-heads and blankets!

Olivia’s Bunny

5″x7″ acrylic, 2011. Well, I’m pretty sure that this is the fuzziest bunny I have ever painted! I got lost in it’s pink fur for hours and hours, and enjoyed almost every minute of it. The bunny and the nubby blanket beneath it belong to Olivia, who turns one in October. Olivia has kept both objects close to her day and night ever since she was born. She especially loves to rub the bunny’s ear on her face as she falls asleep, to chew on its feet and arm, and to play with the all-important tag. This portrait will be a birthday gift for Olivia from her parents.

Yellow Bunny

8″x10″ acrylic, 2011. Funny how it happens like this, but a couple of weeks ago it seemed as though everyone who has ever won an auction or giveaway portrait contacted me at the same time! Stephanie was the recipient of an custom portrait at an auction benefitting a California elementary school in March. This bunny is the favorite of third-grade son, who is still very attached to it. I was very excited by the rich, Rembrandt-y tones of the photos Stephanie sent me, and had fun working with a darker palette. However, the overall surface of this thing is extremely shiny and difficult to photograph! I’ve been advised to look into flash diffusers…

Grey Bunny

8″x10″ acrylic, 2011. I’m really enjoying that many of the recent toys I’ve painted have been propped against pretty pillows! It could be that I am exceedingly sleepy as I write this, but the sweet embroidery and smooth texture of this pillowcase is just fascinating to me. This much-loved bunny, known simply as “Lovey,” belongs to a new high-school graduate. The portrait was commissioned by Debi, a close friend of her mother, and will be a graduation gift.

Lily’s Bunny

5″x7″ acrylic, 2011. The many well-intended gifts we recieve for our newborn babies can be overwhelming… this bunny blanket was stashed in a closet when Lily was a few weeks old, but would later prove to be very important. After battling a tongue-thrust issue as a baby, it was recommended that Lily be given a substitute for her binky in order to aid her developing speech. The bunny was swapped for the binky, and has been her companion ever since. Lily’s mother Emma points out that the left ear, Lily’s favorite, is dirtier than the right, and that the nose is a bit unraveled. After many near-losses of the bunny, it was decided that it would “live” in Lily’s bed only! This portrait will be a gift for Lily’s upcoming third birthday, immortalizing Pink Bunny… just in case.

Hop Hop

8″x10″ acrylic, 2011. This portrait features favorite childhood objects of both Penny-June and her mother, Kara-Leigh. Hop Hop, a well-worn Jellycat rabbit, belongs to the (adorably named!) Penny-June. Kara-Leigh suggested that Hop Hop be seated on a little wooden chair that was her own when she was small. I like the chiaroscuro lighting on Hop Hop, imbuing him with a bit of mystery… We’ll never know what goes on in that fuzzy head, which is down to its last whisker!

Rabbit

8″x10″ acrylic, 2011. Wait, slow down, stop! You almost drove right by a garage sale that could very well harbor the most significant objects you may ever own! This worn blue Beanie Baby, simply called “Rabbit” by 8-year-old Jenna, is one such find. He was still a bright baby blue when he was discovered, but has since faded and further floppied… Jenna cannot sleep without him beside her to this day! It’s fun knowing that Rabbit has been loved by families who are local to me, as Julie lives nearby and found him at an area garage sale… and found me through an article in our newspaper!

Sophia’s Bunny

8″x10″ acrylic, 2011. I just recieved an adorable photo of 4-year-old Sophia holding this painting. Her mom, Dawn, tells me that Sophia looked at it and, after a slow moment of recognition, smiled and said “LOVEY!!” Dawn ordered this portrait after Lovey the bunny blanket had been lost and found for the millionth time, the better to preserve it — just in case. Emilia’s Bunny

5″x7″ acrylic, 2011. Colleen found me via a local Etsy search, and since she lives mere blocks from me, I had the pleasure of meeting this bunny/blanket in person! Not wanting to separate it from 2-year-old Emilia for any significant length of time, Colleen and I worked together to take a nice photo for me to use. The family does have a “back-up” bunny which stays at Emilia’s daycare, but I suspect that there is no substitute for the home bunny. In this portrait, the bunny is arranged on top of a green blanket that is a another favorite of Emilia’s.
